About Acne

Acne is an inflammatory condition that can affect any age group. Acne can appear at any time due to the build up of bacteria, hormonal changes, excess oil production and/or irregular shedding of dead skin cells.

What causes Acne?

Acne occurs when your hair follicles – tiny holes in the skin, become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. This happens when the sebaceous glands attached to the hair follicles produce excess sebum (an oily substance produced to lubricate hair and skin to prevent dryness). The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and forms a plug in the follicle. If the plugged follicle is close to the surface of the skin, it can cause whiteheads. The plugged follicle can be open to the skin causing blackheads.

Normally harmless bacteria that live on the skin can contaminate and infect the plugged follicle causing inflammatory lesions. These lesions are more likely to cause skin scarring. Acne is a common condition. Research suggests that 9.4% of people worldwide are affected by Acne.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can adults get Acne?

Yes. Acne can be experienced at any age due to changing hormone levels that regulate sebum and sweat production. This increase can lead to an excess of sebum which then clogs the pores and results in Acne.

Pregnancy also causes fluctuations in hormone levels as do certain types of oral contraceptives. An ovarian cyst can also cause Acne.

Oil based make up can also block skin pores in adults causing Acne.

Another cause of Acne in adults is anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders to increase muscle mass and strength. Side effects include Acne.

Can stress cause Acne?

Yes, stress can trigger hormonal changes that then cause excess sebum production triggering Acne.

How long are the skin-needling treatments and what is the downtime?

Skin needling treatments are approximately 30-40 minutes in duration depending on the area to be treated and there is no downtime.

How does skin needling differ from fractional RF?

Skin needling is a collagen boosting procedure that stimulates natural healing processes to improve the appearance of a range of skin concerns. During skin needling, micro-channels that allow topical skin care products to penetrate to the deeper layers of the dermis where the active ingredients can be more effective.

RF is a skin rejuvenation and resurfacing treatment. Your Skin Therapist uses a handheld applicator to apply fractional delivery of radiofrequency energy across the treated area. The procedure causes micro-ablative injuries to the deeper layers of skin, stimulating the body to generate healthy new skin cells. The treatment targets the dermis, triggering a strong healing response while minimising the impact on the top epidermal layers. RF is a non invasive approach to reducing Acne scars.
